Pension fraud investigators.
Pension fraud occurs when money is stolen from an individuals pension via a scam but fraud can also occur in the pension fund itself.
Continued turbulence in world markets and low interest rates on savings has enticed many people to unlock part (and on occasions all) of their pension to invest in schemes offering returns above the current base rate.
Pensions are one of our most valuable assets. For many it ensures financial security throughout retirement but the lure of high returns has exposed many people to fraud.
Be aware that pension scams often involve fraudsters cloning the websites of official organisations, including government bodies.
You may receive emails, texts or phone calls seemingly from the Department for Work & Pensions (DWP) asking you to click on links which result in scammers gaining access to your computer to obtain your personal information.
Here are some telltale signs of pension scams to look out for.
Unsolicited contact
Phone calls, emails, texts or a knock on the door claiming they are from the government or pension plan.
Telltale phrases
Watch out for words or phrases that include ‘loophole’, ‘free pension review’, ‘savings advance’ or ‘pension liberation’.
High Interest Rates
Scammers often promote investments returning interest rates of 7 or 8% in property, wine, precious metals or energy.
Long-term investments
Watch out for long-term pension investments. In many cases people aren’t aware that something is wrong for years.
Early pension release
Unsolicited contact by any means offering advice and guidance on accessing your pension before the age of 55.
Couriers
A visit from a courier or company representative asking you to sign paperwork – do not sign.
